PHAP Perspective: Know Your Requirements-A Reminder to Check Medical School Prerequisites

Written by Gabrielle Flores, '26, Pre-Med

Embarking on the path to medical school is a journey filled with challenges and uncertainties. As a pre-med student at UVA, I quickly realized the importance of understanding the intricate web of medical school requirements. My search for clarity began early on as I aimed to optimize my course planning.

One strategy I explored was taking classes over the summer to lighten my load during the academic year. However, delving deeper into medical school requirements opened my eyes to the nuances and specifics demanded by different institutions. Being a Texas resident, I was previously aware of the additional classes required by some Texas medical schools. However, what I discovered through my research was the importance of the format and source of these prerequisite courses.

Medical schools vary significantly in their preference regarding course formats. While some schools accept online courses, many prefer prerequisites to be completed in person at 4-year universities. This revelation prompted me to adjust my course planning, opting for in-person classes at UVA rather than online alternatives. Keeping a checklist of each school's preferences proved invaluable in navigating the complexities of course selection.

The Medical School Admissions Requirements (MSAR) database emerged as a source of direction in this process. This comprehensive resource outlines every pre-med course for each institution, detailing whether it is recommended, required, or allowed with AP Credit. Moreover, it provides essential insights into additional notes for each course, offering useful transparency for aspiring medical students.

As I continue to refine my course plan, I'm reminded of the importance of staying informed and adaptable. While the MSAR serves as a valuable reference, reaching out to individual schools or exploring their websites for additional information is advantageous for a complete understanding of their requirements.
